How the antibacterial surface works

The antibacterial function on Polyrey antibacterial laminates comes from a silver-based additive – silver phosphoborate glass – that is incorporated into the decorative surface layer during manufacture. Because it is built into the material rather than applied afterwards as a coating, it is not polished, scrubbed or worn away, and the protection is intended to last for the working life of the panel.

Ambient humidity releases silver ions at the surface. Those ions interfere with the metabolism of bacteria that land on the panel, which limits their ability to multiply between cleans. Polyrey tests the finish to JIS Z 2801:2010, the standard method for measuring antibacterial activity on non-porous surfaces, and reports a 99.9% reduction over a 24-hour test period across seven strains including Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Salmonella enteritidis, Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus and MRSA.

What this does not mean. An antibacterial surface supplements a cleaning regime; it does not replace one. The figures above describe laboratory performance against bacteria under a defined 24-hour test, not real-time disinfection in a working washroom, and they are not a claim about viruses or fungi. Cubicles carrying this finish are construction products, not medical devices, and infection-control policy should continue to be set by the building operator.

The panel matters as much as the treatment

Much of the hygiene performance of a cubicle comes from its construction. These cubicles use 13mm Polyrey compact grade laminate: a solid, through-thickness panel with a non-porous face and no separate core to absorb water. Cut edges are CNC-machined, radiused and polished, so there is no exposed chipboard, no lipping to lift and no crevice along the edge for soil to collect in. That combination is what allows the panels to be cleaned frequently with commercial disinfectants without swelling, delaminating or breaking down – the failure mode that usually affects standard MFC cubicles in a heavy cleaning regime.

The standard arrangement carries a 1950mm door height from finished floor with 150mm ground clearance, so floors can be mopped or machine-cleaned under the cubicle rather than around it. Heavy-duty black powder-coated aluminium fittings with concealed fixings keep the number of exposed ledges and fixing heads to a minimum.

Where antimicrobial cubicles are specified

Healthcare. Hospitals, clinics, GP and dental surgeries and care homes clean washrooms often and with strong chemicals, which is exactly the regime a compact laminate panel is built for. Where infection control drives the specification, the antibacterial finish is usually chosen alongside the material rather than instead of it. Education. School and college washrooms combine heavy daily use with a limited cleaning window. The same durability that suits healthcare also suits school toilet cubicles, and the antibacterial finish is often requested for SEN provision, early-years facilities and washrooms adjacent to food technology or science areas. Leisure, hospitality and food environments. Gyms, swimming pools, changing rooms, holiday parks and food-service washrooms combine moisture, high throughput and frequent cleaning. Compact laminate is the usual answer to the moisture, and the antibacterial finish is an added specification where the operator has a documented hygiene standard to meet. What we check before quoting an antimicrobial specification

Antimicrobial is one line in a specification, not the whole of it. Before we quote, we work through the same checks on every enquiry:

  • Environment. Wet, humid or dry? Wet and humid areas point to compact laminate regardless of whether the antibacterial finish is added.
  • Cleaning regime. How often, and with what chemicals? This governs the material choice more than anything else.
  • Traffic and use. Public, staff-only, or a mix; and whether the washroom sees peak loading such as class changeover or visiting hours.
  • Accessibility. Doc M provision, outward-opening doors, ironmongery, and colour contrast between adjacent surfaces.
  • Dimensions and layout. Room drawings, cubicle quantities, ceiling heights, floor clearance and any project-specific dimensional or access constraints.
  • Coordination. Whether IPS duct panels, vanity units and cubicle fittings need to match the cubicle finish.
  • Finish. Colour selection confirmed against physical samples rather than on-screen previews.

What makes a toilet cubicle antimicrobial?

A silver-based antibacterial additive is incorporated into the decorative surface of the laminate during manufacture. Ambient humidity releases silver ions, which disrupt the metabolism of bacteria on the surface and limit their ability to multiply between cleans. It is part of the panel, not a coating applied to it.

Does an antimicrobial cubicle replace cleaning?

No. The finish is designed to complement a cleaning and disinfection regime, not to substitute for one. Washrooms should continue to be cleaned to the operator’s normal standard and schedule.

Does the antibacterial protection wear off over time?

The additive is distributed through the surface layer rather than sitting on top of it, so normal cleaning and everyday wear do not remove it. The manufacturer states that protection is retained for the life of the panel and that the finish is resistant to standard disinfectants and care products.

Has the finish been independently tested?

Can I have the same colours as your standard cubicles?

Do you install the cubicles?

No. Total Cubicle Solutions is supply only. We manufacture and supply cubicles, IPS panels, vanity units and fittings to your specification; installation is arranged by your own contractor.
