Are lockers waterproof? Not always. A locker may be suitable for a changing room, school corridor or office without being designed to withstand regular splashing, high humidity or direct washdown. Are lockers waterproof in commercial settings?

Steel lockers
Powder-coated steel lockers remain a practical, cost-effective choice for many dry and lightly damp areas. They are widely used in schools, staff rooms, offices and workplace changing rooms. In a properly ventilated setting with normal cleaning routines, steel can offer dependable service and a broad range of compartment layouts.
They are less suitable for persistent wet exposure. Scratches, damaged coatings, panel joints and areas around fixings can become vulnerable to corrosion over time. Steel may be appropriate near a changing area, but it is rarely the first choice for poolside use, shower rooms or spaces exposed to regular splashing.
Melamine-faced board lockers
Melamine-faced board can be suitable for dry internal environments where value and appearance are the main priorities. It should not be specified as waterproof. If water reaches unprotected board edges or joints, the core can swell and deteriorate.
For schools and offices, this may be entirely acceptable where lockers are positioned away from wet clothing, showers and high-humidity zones. For changing rooms with a heavier moisture load, a more resilient material will usually offer better long-term value.
What to specify for wet-area lockers
Material selection is the starting point, but it is not the full specification. Facilities professionals and project teams should consider how the lockers will be used, cleaned and maintained over their working life.
Start with the source and frequency of moisture. Occasional damp coats and umbrellas require a different response from wet swimwear, shower-room splashes or continuously humid air.
